Summer isn’t as easy as you think…

Why do I always think summer will be “easier?”  It never is!  We usually stay out later, have more plans, carry more stuff, and are just over all busier. Don’t get me wrong, I love it…. it’s just that I am ready for school to start!

I have clients calling me left and right that are falling “off the wagon”. They are way too busy to cook, take care of themselves or go to the grocery store, they are grabbing anything they can to eat and are just feeling bogged down and lousy.  To make matters worse, camp is over and they are busier than ever!  They can’t stay on a healthy plan.  What to do?!  When one doesn’t have the time to cook, or to prepare healthy foods, you eat what you can, right?  But then you get hit on the backside by not feeling as good, being sluggish, bloated, not wanting to get into that bathing suit and even worse, you want more sugar!

So, in the weeks we have left, maybe we should implement a bit of self care.  Here are a few steps that are simple, easy and will hopefully help support your sanity.

-Get enough water and sleep in. – Of course, most know that, but few can do it!  With more sleep and water intake, you are better able to meet the other challenges.  It’s true!!  You will totally have more will power and be able to say no to the chocolate marshmallow covered snowball when you have slept a full 8 hours and are not parched.  Believe me!!

-Do a protein shake every morning! – want energy fast and easy?   Protein shakes are your ticket. You can quickly get a boost from these easily made and deliciously cool concoctions.  Have one in the morning for a great balance of protein, fats and carbohydrates, or do it in the afternoon during the 3pm “dwindles.”  These are great for kids too.  Make a blender full and share it with your children.  Call it a milkshake and watch them guzzle it down.

-Drink green refreshing lemonade –This takes a few minutes to make.  It is a great, filling and detoxifying drink. Put some lemons, cucumbers, mint and a bit of stevia into your blender.  Blend on high speed and serve over ice.  Sip in the morning and after lunch for an amazing pick me up.  This will help make you more alkaline, help with weight loss, and sugar cravings.

-Take your snacks with you everywhere- whether you think you are going home or not!  Getting caught unawares without something to eat is when you have to pull over and get a donut!!  Travel with plenty of protein bars, cherries, apples and raw nuts.  This way, there is never a “good” excuse!

-Be sure to get in adequate protein and calories at breakfast and lunch – in my practice, this is where I see most women get tripped up.  Women will usually “diet” for breakfast and lunch and stay “in control” but when 3pm rolls around, or for some women it’s after dinner, they get huge waves of sweet and carbohydrate cravings. This is because their previous meals weren’t balanced enough.  Go ahead and eat the bigger breakfast and lunch.  Experiment!  You will see that the cravings later on are hugely diminished.

-Do a detox! – consider doing a week or a month long detox of protein shakes and light meals.  This is a great jump start to any wellness program.

Try a couple or all of these things to rejuvenate you and get ahead of the busiest weeks of summer.  Do a little self care in the morning and it will have huge payoffs.
